How to Remove a Background from an Image

Start with the output you need

A transparent cutout is useful when the same subject will appear on several backgrounds. A white background is useful when you need a single finished product image. Choose the destination before editing so you can judge the edge against the right color.

Open the background remover for transparent output, or use the white background maker to begin with white selected.

1. Upload a clear source image

Choose the original photo rather than a screenshot of a small thumbnail. Keep the whole subject inside the frame. Cropped-off hair, missing shoe tips and motion blur cannot be recovered simply by removing the background.

Use the upload button or drag an image into the tool. You can also choose a sample first to try the workflow. Wait for the processed image to open in the editor.

2. Inspect the result before downloading

Look at the outer silhouette, then check gaps inside the subject: a bag handle, the space between an arm and a body, and loose hair. Preview on both light and dark backgrounds. A pale halo that blends into white can become obvious on dark blue.

The checkerboard is a transparency preview. It should not be part of your downloaded image. A PNG file can still contain a solid background; the filename alone does not prove transparency.

3. Refine only the areas that need it

Open the cutout controls. Use Erase to remove unwanted background and Restore to bring back an accidentally removed area. Choose a smaller brush near delicate edges. Work in short strokes and use Undo when a stroke affects the subject.

For hair, inspect the edge without expecting every blurred strand to survive. If a large area is missing, try a clearer source instead of painting the entire object back by hand. See the hair background remover for an example focused on difficult edges.

4. Choose the background and export

Leave the background transparent for a reusable cutout. Choose white or another solid color for a finished image, or upload a background photo in the editor. Download the PNG and open it in the application where you will actually use it.

A white viewer canvas does not necessarily mean transparency has been lost. Place the file on a colored slide or layer to check. If the subject looks too small, inspect the canvas dimensions before stretching it.

When the result needs another pass

• White product disappearing: check the handle, rim and highlight areas with Restore.
• Background visible between hair strands: erase carefully, or use a source with stronger separation.
• Ragged outline: reduce brush size and avoid repeatedly brushing over the same edge.
• Several product photos: use the bulk background remover, then review each result individually.

Background removal changes the surrounding pixels. It does not guarantee marketplace approval, document-photo compliance or a higher-resolution source.
